Equipment

  • 1 dry measuring cup
  • 1 large bowl
  • 1 separate bowl

Ingredients

  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup chocolate chips
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg white
  • ¼ cup butter or margarine, melted
  • 1 cup flour (I used 1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour and 1/2 cup all purpose)

Instructions

  • Lightly spoon the flour into a dry measuring cup, and level it off with a knife. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt and stir to blend.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk the sugars, butter, egg white, and vanilla together until light and fluffy. Whisk the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients in two additions until the batter is very well blended. If the batter looks more “crumbly” than smooth, add just a splash of water at a time (ONLY if needed) until it smooths out.
  • Drop by level spoonfuls about 1 inch apart onto baking sheets coated lightly with cooking spray. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 -10 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven, and let stand 5 minutes before removing the cookies from the pans to cool on wire racks. Enjoy!

Cooking Tips

Low Fat Chocolate Chip Cookies
Discover the secrets behind perfectly baked, low-fat cookies

Creating the perfect batch of Low Fat Chocolate Chip Cookies requires a blend of technique and attention to detail. These cooking tips will help you achieve incredible results every time, ensuring that your cookies turn out crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and bursting with chocolatey goodness.

  • Ingredient Insight: Use high-quality, low-fat ingredients to maintain the integrity of the recipe. Opt for low-fat butter or margarine, and choose dark chocolate chips for a richer flavor. Avoid substituting key ingredients, as it may alter the texture and taste of the cookies.
  • Proper Dough Handling: It’s essential to refrigerate the cookie dough for at least 30 minutes before baking. Chilled dough not only prevents the cookies from spreading too much but also enhances their texture. Additionally, use a cookie scoop or tablespoon to ensure consistent sizes for even baking.
  • Baking Time and Temperature: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) for optimum results. Bake the cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet for approximately 10-12 minutes, or until the edges turn golden brown. Keep a close eye on them as baking times may vary depending on your oven’s calibration.
  • Cooling for Perfection: After removing Low Fat Chocolate Chip Cookies from the oven, let them cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes. This allows the cookies to set and firm up slightly before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Patience is key here; fully cooled cookies have the best texture.
  • Avoid Overbaking: To prevent Low Fat Chocolate Chip Cookies from becoming dry and brittle, avoid overbaking them. Remember that cookies continue to bake on the hot baking sheet even after being taken out of the oven. They should appear slightly underdone in the center when you remove them, as they will firm up as they cool.
